The Problem

Protein powders often rely on high levels of sugar or artificial sweeteners to achieve their sweet taste. But those same ingredients are what consumers are increasingly trying to avoid. Brands are left balancing difficult tradeoffs: sugar, artificial sweeteners, off-notes, masking agents, and ingredient lists that don’t align with evolving consumer preferences.

The Solution

We set out to develop a protein powder sweetened entirely with natural ingredients, bringing Oobli sweet proteins into sports nutrition while maintaining the taste profile consumers expect from the category.

Our Process

Formulation

Rather than relying on a single sweetener, we built a complementary sweetening system. Stevia established a base level of sweetness, while Oobli sweet proteins helped bridge the gap to reach target sweetness levels.

Optimization

We refined the sweetener ratio to reduce bitterness, lingering aftertaste, and other common protein powder off-notes. Each adjustment moved the profile toward a smoother, more balanced taste.

Result

The final prototype replaced artificial sweeteners with a fully natural sweetening system while still delivering the sweetness consumers expect. It shows how Oobli sweet proteins and stevia can work together to create a cleaner, better-tasting protein powder.
