Sweet Proteins

What are sweet proteins?

Bye-bye sugar — hello healthy sweetness! Meet the future of sweet. These are novel proteins from nature that charade as sweeteners but digest like proteins. You don't get any of the bad sugar and sugar-alternative side-effects (like triggered blood sugar levels and changing gut microbiomes).

Where do sweet proteins come from?

Most sweet proteins come from fruits and berries that are native to West Africa and other similarly hard-to-reach (and not easy to grow in) places. Many of these fruits and berries have been used for centuries by locals as naturally occurring sweeteners. We like to think of them as "nature's candy."

How do sweet proteins work?

Sweet proteins evolved to trick primates into climbing to hard-to-reach places in search of delicious sweet flavors. What did the plants get? They could stay alive by having their seeds spread. When the primates ate the sweet proteins they triggered their T1R2/T1R3 receptors (these are how we "taste" sweet flavors) for a satisfying bite.

Because they are proteins, not sugars, they immediately unfold and are digested without triggering blood sugar levels and offering small amounts of energy. Turns out that an evolutionary trick is exactly what we humans need today — the sweet tastes we love without any of the health baggage.

How much sweeter are sweet proteins than sugar?

Oobli sweet proteins are up to 5,000 times sweeter on a like-for-like (size) basis. So, incredibly sweet. A little goes a long way!

Are sweet proteins healthy?

Sweet proteins don't trigger blood sugar levels in digestion or issues in our guts. Sweet proteins are protein, not sugar. Period.

Does eating Sweet Proteins constitute protein-loading?

Sweet proteins are up to 5,000 times sweeter on a like-for-like (size) basis, so a little goes a long way. Although we use sweet proteins to sweeten our products, we use such small amounts that it doesn't change the % total of proteins already in that particular food. Specific foods list specific proteins on their nutrition fact panels. Sweet proteins show up in the protein % to total.

Are Sweet Proteins natural?

Yep, our proteins come from nature without any chemicals or unpronounceable ingredients included. Nothing funky, just all-natural sweetness.

Does your protein contain GMOs?

No, Oobli proteins are nature-identical and do not contain GMOs. The yeast we work with are really good at producing different kinds of protein naturally. We simply give them instructions for producing exactly the type of protein we want — in this case, sweet proteins. We then filter out the yeast, leaving only sweet protein powder. In other words, we use a bioengineering process, but there’s no genetic material present in our delicious sweet proteins.

How do you make your Sweet Proteins?

Our sweet proteins are made through a fermentation process called “precision fermentation.”   And while fermentation has been around for years -- used to make everything from cheese to vitamins (think brewing beer!) -- thanks to amazing break-throughs in technology in recent years we can now also "brew" very specialized sweet proteins that are identical to the sweet proteins found in nature. These proteins offer a game-changing solution for delicious sweet foods that are good for your body and our planet.

Sweet Iced Teas

Where are Oobli teas made?

Our teas are made in a manufacturing facility in Stevenson, Washington.

What makes Oobli teas different from other sweet iced teas?

Oobli iced teas are the only low-sugar teas that don’t contain any questionable alternative sweeteners, sugar alcohols or refined sugar, and have only 7g sugar per an entire 16oz can. How do we deliver our deliciously sweet craft-brewed taste?

We use sweet proteins, a revolutionary game-changing plant protein, to deliver most of the sweetness in Oobli ice teas. Then we add a little bit of real fruit juice/puree and a dash of agave to round out the sweetness, for a low-sugar tea that has 75% less sugar than other teas.

What are the ingredients in Oobli teas?

Oobli Lemon Sweet Iced Tea: Water, Black Tea Extract, Organic Agave Syrup, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Oubli Fruit Sweet Protein

Oobli Mango Yuzu Sweet Iced Tea: Water, Mango Puree, Green Tea Extract, Organic Agave Syrup, Yuzu Juice, Green Tea Essence, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Oubli Fruit Sweet Protein

Oobli Peach Sweet Iced Tea: Water, Black Tea Extract, Organic Agave Syrup, Peach Juice Concentrate, Peach Puree Concentrate, Natural Flavors, Malic Acid, Citric Acid, Oubli Fruit Sweet Protein

How is there only 7g of sugar in an entire 16oz can of Oobli tea?

It’s not magic! Oobli sweet teas and chocolates are the world’s very first products where the sweetness profile comes primarily from protein, with no alternative sweeteners, sugar alcohols or refined sugar. We believe sweet proteins are the future of better sweet foods, a game-changing new way for us all to have the sweet taste we love, relying less on sugar or other questionable sweeteners. Sweet proteins are no-compromise, taste like sugar and are better for our health: safe for blood sugar and the gut microbiome.

Then we add a little real fruit juice and/or fruit purees, plus a dash of agave syrup to round out the flavor. The result? A groundbreaking craft-brewed sweet tea with only 7g of sugar in an entire 16oz can!

How are Oobli Sweet Teas sweetened with protein but have zero protein listed on the nutrition facts panel?

With sweet proteins, a little goes a long way! Because sweet proteins are up to 10,000 times sweeter than sugar, we only need to use a tiny amount to bring sweetness to an entire can of our sweet teas. And when we say tiny, we mean tiny! Sweet proteins make up less than 1% of the total ingredients in our teas.

Molecularly speaking, sweet proteins are just like any other dietary protein (think meat, dairy or legumes). If you ate a whole bunch of sweet proteins, you would actually contribute to your daily protein requirement in your diet.

But again, because sweet proteins are way sweeter than sugar, a little really does go a long way — and we don’t use enough to add to the nutritional label.
