Oobli Sweet Proteins and Our Mission of Safety and Transparency

Oobli Sweet Proteins and Our Mission of Safety and Transparency

Here at Oobli, we’re on a mission to change the world with sweet proteins. Oobli is the first end-to-end technology platform and consumer products company to leverage breakthrough precision fermentation to unlock the power of sweet plant proteins in foods. Derived from fruits, sweet proteins deliver a sugar-like sweetness that is both healthy and good for the planet.

We’re in the middle of an epidemic. Our diets are over reliant on ultra-processed foods, loaded with sugar and refined carbohydrates. More than 40% of Americans are now classified as obese, and that number is climbing. Obesity rates are even higher for multicultural populations, and shockingly, 1 out of every 5 American children are now considered obese. And more than 140 million Americans have type-2 diabetes or prediabetes

Craving sugar is natural. In fact, we’re biologically designed to seek sweetness. Our ancestors sought out sweet foods like fruit and honey as an energy-dense source of calories, vitamins and minerals, including essential glucose needed for brain development.

So while we thrived off the occasional sugar binge, we’re not designed for the extreme overabundance of refined sugar that’s present in our everyday diets. The average American consumes a whopping 17 teaspoons of sugar per day.

It’s evident that we need better food solutions that help millions of people reduce their reliance on sugar to enable them to take back control of their health and prosper.

That’s where Oobli comes in.

Oolbi’s Sweet Innovation

Sweet proteins are nature’s candy. Derived from fruit, they evolved from plants that grow near the equator that evolved to trick us into thinking they’re sugar. Thousands of times sweeter than sugar, sweet proteins are exactly that: protein. We digest sweet proteins just like any other protein, meaning that — unlike sugar or alternative sweeteners — they have no impact on our blood sugar, insulin, or gut microbiome.

We’ve spent more than 7 years perfecting Oobli’s precision fermentation process, meaning we can sustainably and efficiently produce sweet proteins to replace the majority of sugar in almost any food product, meaning more options for anyone looking to reduce their sugar intake without sacrificing sweetness and indulgence.

Our first product here at Oobli is dark chocolate, available now. Our indulgent chocolates featuring sweet proteins come in three flavors, contain 70% less sugar (a mere 3 grams of sugar per 32g serving) than almost every other dark chocolate bar, and have a clean label with natural ingredients.

Sustainability through Precision Fermentation

Precision fermentation, a safe, well-established method that has been used to produce proteins (including rennet for cheese and insulin for diabetes) has been around for decades. In recent years, precision fermentation has become increasingly popular to sustainably create better, healthier foods with a positive climate impact.

By fermenting sweet proteins to sweeten our favorite foods rather than growing more sugar cane, we dramatically reduce the amount of precious ecosystem land dedicated to sugar crop farming. For every 1% reduction of sugar production, we save 650,000 acres of land. That means our low-footprint, naturally-fermented sweet proteins are a straight line to healthier ecosystems.

Safety and Transparency: GRAS in the United States

But nothing is more important to us than people’s health and safety. Because of that, we are working closely with regulatory agencies across the globe to meet the highest standards of safety.

For products sold in the United States, we follow the FDA's Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) standard under sections 201(s) and 409 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

A GRAS Panel convened by Oobli, independently and critically evaluated all data and information, concluded that Oubli fruit sweet protein (brazzein) is GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) for our use in conventional food and beverage products based on scientific procedures.

In addition, please see our published safety study evaluating the safety of Oobli sweet proteins, which concluded that our specific sweet protein (brazzein) is considered safe for our intended use as a sweetener in food and beverages, and is also non-allergenic with no adverse effects.

Health and Transparency Is Always Is Our Top Priority

The world needs better, sustainable foods that work for our health, rather than against it. The current epidemic of obesity and diabetes through a food industry rife with ultra-processed foods needs better solutions that help millions reduce their dependence on sugar and artificial sweeteners, with sustainable solutions that are good for the planet. Oobli’s mission is to bring healthy sweetness to the masses with Oobli sweet proteins, and we can’t wait for you to try the game-changing taste of sweet proteins.
