The Sweet Swap: Low-Sugar Moscow Mule Recipe

Oh, the beloved Moscow Mule. A drink with a kick of flavor, a lot of personality, and that iconic copper mug we all secretly love to display on bar carts (but never really know how to use).

Traditionally, this cocktail leans on booze, ginger beer, and lime, served in a copper mug. Why the copper, you ask? More than just aesthetics, copper naturally insulates, keeping your drink refreshingly frosty and your ice intact for longer. The result: a crisp sip that stays cold and doesn’t get watered down.

This popular potable has inspired plenty of playful renditions, mixing and matching spirits and flavors. But we think this low-sugar, Japanese-inspired version takes the proverbial cake.

Meet the Tokyo Mule. We’ve swapped the vodka for floral chamomile tea and added a gentle touch of agave and Oobli sweet proteins for a sweetness that’s kind to your body and still full of flavor. You still get that trademark gingery kick—just a little more balanced and breezy. Go fizzy with ginger ale or keep it bold with a dash of ginger extract if you're in a brewed-tea kind of mood.

No copper mug? No problem. A highball glass with plenty of crushed ice works just fine—but we won’t blame you for upgrading your barware.

It’s bright, it’s fresh, and it’ll put a pep in your step without the sugar crash. It’s your new go-to summer sip.

Pair it with:

  • Edamame with sea salt

  • Cucumber-avocado sushi rolls

  • Crispy rice crackers

  • Soba noodle salad

Whether you’re hosting a summer hang or just making a moment out of a Monday, the Tokyo Mule brings a little extra magic to your mocktail game.

Ingredients:

  • 6½ tbsp water

  • 1½ tbsp Chamomile tea (cooled)

  • ⅛ tsp agave syrup

  • 1 drop ginger ale extract or ginger syrup

  • 1 drop Oobli Fruit Sweet Protein Concentrate

  • Garnishes like a lime wedge and fresh mint leaves

Directions:

  1. Make chamomile tea by steeping one tea bag in ½ cup hot water for 5-10 minutes, cool completely before using.

  2. Combine all liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake well and strain into a chilled glass.

  3. Garnish as desired and serve immediately.

  4. Cheers!
